How to choose a safe, natural sunscreen

How to choose a safe, natural sunscreen

By now we have all heard the message, you have to wear sunscreen to keep your skin in tip top condition and to keep premature ageing at bay.

But what sun protection is safe?

It’s not always possible or practical to wear a hat and protective clothing so finding safe ways to protect your skin from the sun is important.

The difference between ‘physical’ and ‘chemical’ sunscreens

Should you choose a physical sunscreen which sits on top of the skin and uses UV filters that reflect, scatter and block the suns rays. Or a chemical sunscreen that uses active ingredients to absorb UV radiation, preventing them from penetrating the skin.

While chemical sunscreen is sometimes easier to use, lighter in consistency and requires less re-application many contain powerful free radical generators and endocrine disruptors, which means that they can wreak havoc on your hormones.

We don’t want anything messing with our hormones or damaging our skin, so for our money you can’t go past a Zinc Oxide based sunscreen product, which is called a physical sunscreen.

How to choose a natural sunscreen

What makes Zinc Oxide the pick of the bunch?

It protects your skin from the full spectrum of UVA and UVB rays making it the most comprehensive natural sunscreen ingredient currently available. It provides the best UVA ray protection of all current sunscreen chemicals.

But what makes Zinc Oxide truly safe is that it’s a physical barrier sun protectant and sits on top of your skin forming a shield between you and the rays of the sun.

As long as non-nano particle zinc is used, the zinc will not be absorbed by your body and remains on the surface of the skin.

The sun protection occurs through the Zinc Oxide sunscreen particles sitting on the outermost layer of your skin where they reflect and scatter the ultraviolet rays, protecting the living skin layers below. Zinc Oxide is really the broadest of all the sunscreen ingredients. It protects against UVA and UVB radiation up to wavelengths of 380mm.

In addition, it is the only active sunscreen ingredient approved by the FDA for babies under six months, making it without a doubt the best and gentlest, natural sunscreen available.

Zinc Oxide is widely known for its skin benefits and is used as a skin protectant in many different applications because of its soothing, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. Zinc Oxide is the active ingredient in many nappy rash creams, which is pretty clear evidence that it is gentle and safe for even the most sensitive of skins.

Toxin Free Tribe recommends the following low tox sunscreens with Zinc Oxide as the main active ingredient:

For the Body

{SIMPLE as that} SPF30 Natural Sunscreen Lotion

Little Urchin Natural Sunscreen SPF 30

For Children

Little Innoscents Natural Sun lotion SPF 30
Wotnot Natural Baby Sunscreen SPF 30

Zinc Oxide occurs in nature as the mineral Zincite. It’s mined from the ground and then purified via steam distillation to pharmaceutical grade, which means its so pure you could eat it if you wanted to.

By way of a special manufacturing process, you can get Zinc Oxide that is pH neutral and does not alter the pH of products that it’s used in, ensuring it is gentle on the skin.

Zinc Oxide’s other benefits

In addition to its sun protection properties, zinc as a trace mineral in itself, helps maintain collagen and elastin fibres which provide the skin with its firmness, helping in the prevention of sagging skin and wrinkles. It also links together amino acids that are needed for the formation of collagen which helps to keep our skin’s youthful appearance.

We recommend Zinc Oxide because it is not only gentle, safe and natural but has the added benefit of soothing anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties that help to heal your skin whilst providing complete broad spectrum sun protection.

In our opinion you can’t do any better than Zinc Oxide.
